The concept of the "The little train of sleep" represents the organization of sleep cycles. It presents itself as a set of wagons symbolizing the different stages of sleep, whose duration and composition evolve with age..
2 types of phases: slow sleep and paradoxical sleep
Each cycle consists of two distinct phases:
The calm phases, also known as "slow" sleep are when Baby recovers physically.
The phases of intense brain activity, known as "paradoxical" sleep are the moments when Baby dreams. During this phase, the baby processes and memorizes the day's events, assimilating new knowledge.
With each new cycle, the baby experiences micro-awakenings. Although they may display signs of restlessness, they remain drowsy in reality. It's important not to rush immediately. Give them the opportunity to calm down and fall back asleep on their own. Sometimes, gentle comforting in the form of soft touches or a pacifier might be enough, without necessarily needing to be picked up. If you intervene with every micro-awakening, the baby might develop a habit of seeking your presence at the end of each sleep cycle. However, it's up to you to assess your baby's cries and intervene if necessary to help them fall back asleep.
